Creating Meaningful Events for Kids: Lessons from a Skate Day Celebration

Vallejo, California [June 11, 2022] When planning events for kids, tradition often guides the way. However, sometimes, the most meaningful experiences come from embracing new ideas—especially those sparked by young minds themselves. This was the case when the Philippine Cultural Committee decided to celebrate Philippine Independence Day a little differently this year. Instead of the usual festivities, we hosted a Skate Day and Skating Competition, an event inspired by a passionate 14-year-old Filipino skater in our community.

Breaking Barriers and Embracing New Ideas

Leading up to the event, we heard a range of concerns: “Isn’t that dangerous?” “What if they fall?” These are common hesitations when introducing non-traditional activities for kids. However, by fostering an environment of support and encouragement, we transformed skepticism into enthusiasm. We reached out to community leaders, gathered support, and created a space where kids could safely explore a sport they love while celebrating their heritage.

The Power of Learning to Fall

On the day of the event, the lessons extended far beyond skateboarding skills. Kids fell—but they also learned to get back up. Some found the courage to push themselves further, while others stood on the sidelines, cheering with their boards tapping against the ground. What started as an event about skating quickly became a metaphor for resilience, confidence, and community.

By the end of the day, the initial worries about safety had transformed into excitement: “We need to do more of these events for our kids.” “When is the next competition?” These responses confirmed that when children are given opportunities to try, fail, and grow, they don’t just gain skills—they gain confidence and a sense of belonging.

Encouraging Community-Driven Events for Kids

This Skate Day was more than just a one-time celebration; it was a powerful reminder of what happens when we listen to the voices of young people and create events that empower them. As community organizers, parents, and leaders, it’s crucial to ask: What happens if we don’t give kids the chance to learn, fall, and fly?

Through this experience, we’ve seen firsthand how non-traditional events can strengthen a community and inspire future generations. As we continue planning more activities throughout the month of June, we invite you to join us in creating spaces where kids can thrive—whether through sports, arts, or cultural celebrations.
